I was hiking in the foothills of Southern California in December and noticed stands of prickly pear cactus were flowering despite the lack of rain we had received. I was attracted to this group of cactus because of their structural interest and beauty. I spent a month painting this image, glazing and searching for the rich colors in the shadows.
